The Rev. Dr. Matthew Lawrence
Canon for Spiritual Formation
Matthew came to Trinity in September 2017. As Canon for Spiritual Formation, he serves to deepen our engagement with the intellectual, liturgical, artistic and contemplative dimensions of our life together.
Raised in Minnesota on a steady diet of NPR, modern jazz, classical music and The Beatles, Matthew's great loves include Garrison Keillor, Rostropovich, bourbon on the rocks, Mary Oliver, and the Minnesota Twins. He enjoys tennis, pool, hiking, writing, and long rides on his Kawasaki Vulcan. He was married for 30 years, and has one son, Tom-an attorney living in Sacramento.
Matthew graduated from Reed College in 1980, and received Master's degrees from the University of Chicago's Divinity School and the School for Public Policy Studies before receiving his Doctor of Ministry degree from Seabury-Western Seminary. He was ordained by Bishop Barbara Harris in 1990, has served parishes in the Boston area, Michigan, and Sonoma County, California, and served as Chaplain at the University of Michigan and at Sutter Hospitals in San Francisco.
